Seeking God

Seeking God

Receiving Jesus As Your Personal Lord and Savior

1. Know: God Loves You!

God loves you and wants you to know Him personally now and forever. Your Creator gave you a soul that longs for completion in Him.

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." Genesis 1:27

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16

2. Understand: Your Separation From God

God is holy (without sin) and we are sinful. God cannot be in a relationship where sin exists. The Bible, Gods word tells us:

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23

"But your iniquities have separated you from God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear." Isaiah 59:2

We were created with free will and have chosen to go our own way. It may be in active rebellion or passive indifference. It is sin and it separates us from God. Our true purpose is blocked. We cannot work our way through to God. In fact, no amount of self-effort will ever succeed.

"Not by works, so that no one can boast." Ephesians 2:9

Our separation problem will not end with this life. The Bible describes punishment after our physical bodies have died.

"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." Matthew 25:46

God is just! Thus, everyone owes a penalty for his or her sins. If we do nothing or if we try to pay the penalty ourselves, we are condemned to spend eternity in punishment.

Is there another way to pay for our sins?

How can we be saved from death? We need a Savior!

3. Meet Jesus Christ

God, through His love and mercy has given us His perfect Son to pay the penalty for our sins. Jesus, who was without sin, died on the cross for our sins, was buried and after three days rose from the dead. Jesus is God who became man for you.

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8

For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit." 1 Peter 3:18

But also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness-- for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification." Romans 4:24-25

4. Receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord

Christ died for everyone. However, only those who individually accept the free gift and personally invite Jesus into their life, into their heart, will know God. No one can accept the gift of salvation for you. You must place your faith in Jesus. Faith is trusting and believing in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

"Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." John 1:12

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God." Ephesians 2:8

We must also repent of our sins. We ask God to forgive us and we turn away from sin. We ask Jesus to come into our lives to love us and to mold us. We ask Jesus to take control of our lives.

"Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord." Acts 3:19

5. Pray

The following is a suggested prayer:

Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe that you died for my sins. Right now, I turn from sin and open the door of my heart and life. I invite You to come into my heart and I receive You as my personal Lord and Savior. I will follow You and obey You in all that I do. Amen.

"That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Romans 10:9

6. Accept God's Assurance

If you prayed for Jesus to come into your life, you have the promise of God's Word, the Bible as assurance. Don't depend on feelings. The Christian lives by faith in the trustworthiness of God and His Word.

"For 'whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.'" Romans 10:13

God recorded your commitment and you should also. Write the date in your Bible. Now would be an excellent time to purchase one if you don't already have one.

"Rejoice, because your names are written in heaven." Luke 10:20

7. Plan to Grow in Your Faith

The Bible tells us that new Christians are like newborns. We need to have certain essentials to develop and mature in our relationship with God.

"Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good." 1 Peter 2:2-3

Suggestions for Christian Growth:
(Please look up the scripture verses in your Bible)

1. Pray daily (talk and listen to God) (Matthew 6:9-13)
2. Read God's Word (Bible) daily (Acts 17:11) Start with the Gospel of John; Ask God to help you find a Bible Study group.
3. Attend church (Hebrews 10:25) Ask God to help you find a Bible-based church where you can worship Him and have Christian fellowship.
4. Baptism (Acts 2:41)
5. Obey God moment by moment (John 14:21)
6. Ask the Holy Spirit to control and empower your daily life. (Galatians 5:16-17)
7. Tell others about Jesus. (Witness) (Acts 1:8)
8. Read Christian books. Listen to Christian radio programs and tapes. (Acts 2:42)

Prepare for the adventure of your life!

One note of caution:

The Bible tells us Satan is real. If trouble or problems arise, call on the name of Jesus to keep the Devil out of your life.

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 1 Peter 5:8-9

Jesus promises us an abundant life here on earth and in heaven. Claim the promise and the joy! Stand firm in Jesus and in God!

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10
